possibly the best game to play on the PS3 with friends (02/09/2008)
The migration of one of Sony's most popular casual gaming franchises to the Playstation 3 has brought with it something that the equivalent translation of SingStar didn't manage: wireless controllers.
And this is a blessing. As anyone who played the older versions of Buzz can testify, the four buzzer controllers required to play the game had a horrible habit of never stretching far enough, or resembling the end of the day in a spaghetti factory. This time, though, a simple adapter in one of the PS3's USB slots sorts that out, assuming you buy the full version with the new wireless controllers. There's also the option to buy just the game itself and continue to use the older wired controllers, if you still have them from the PS2 days.
Either way, the concept behind Buzz hasn't changed an awful lot. It's still a television quiz show that you play along with, bringing together a collection of rounds that allow you to build up your score in preparation for the slightly-fairer-this-time final showdown.

The rounds are varied, some requiring you to answer questions in quick time, others requiring you to buzz, and others requiring you to simply knock out other players. As before, if you have a roomful of people who need entertaining, then Buzz - hosted again by a happily skippable main character, voiced by Jason Donovan no less - is just the ticket.
But the key attraction to the PS3 version turns out not to be the wireless controllers. Instead, it's the sheer number of questions you get. Previous PS2 Buzz releases were restricted in subject matter, leaving you to buy individual titles covering sport, music, movies and general knowledge. Here, there's a meaty collection of subjects from the off, and - here comes the trump card - you can download fresh subject packs from the PlayStation Network for a modest sum.
This is a terrific way to keep the game fresh, and neatly sidesteps the dead end that occurs when things usually start repeating themselves. Given that the question packs are keenly priced, you don't feel you're being pillaged in quite the same way as you do when paying 99p for a track in SingStar.
Buzz Quiz TV isn't perfect, of course, and the bright and breezy presentation is as likely to irritate as entertain. Plus, for all the graphical improvements, the key game is still a mildly altered variant of the one we've been sold for the past couple of years. It remains as pointless in single player as it always was, as a result.
But when it comes to lighting up a party, Buzz is still a reliable, entertaining way to keep people amused, and the open nature of this new version makes it a solid recommendation.
Quite possibly Sony's best social game for the PS3. It has its problems and it lacks much innovation, but it's a hoot with a crowd.
