serious graphics PC with up to 32GB of RAM (09/01/2007)
Businesses that deal with masses amounts of data, and creative people who are involved in design, modelling and animation, may be interested to learn that Evesham has come up with a custom-made workstation that should take the heat off you by powering quietly and efficiently through the day's tasks.
Solid, black and stern, this is a PC that looks like it means business and, once powered up, the initial blast of fan noise tells you that there's plenty to keep cool inside the case. Fortunately, once the fans are up and running the noise level drips to a satisfying purr.
At the heart of this computer is one of Intel's Dual Core Xeon 5100 series processors (2.66GHz) which immediately boosts the number of applications that can be run simultaneously. Power usage is substantially lower than some other CPUs, reducing heat effects and cost, and the 4MB shared L2 cache both increases the efficiency of cache-to-processor data transfers and also gives you the option to allocate the entire cache to one core.
When it comes to storage, the workstation can be loaded with up to a staggering 32GB of ECC 667MHz, fully buffered DIMM memory, as well as up to six, fast, high capacity SATA II RAID hard drives of at least 160GB each. With this amount of power and space there should be no difficulty in handling even the most complex computer aided design or digital content creation.
As you'd expect, the same care has gone into choosing the right graphics cards for the job and you have a choice between the ATI FireGL range and Nvidia's Quadro range. The sample we had was loaded with the Quadro FX1500 which is in the mid-range in terms of price, but specifically designed for workstation CAD and DCC projects, featuring a 256-bit memory interface, parallel vertex engines, fully programmable pixel pipelines and up to 40GBps memory bandwidth.
For even more complex tasks, the higher-spec FX3500, FX4500, FX4500x2 and FX5500 can also be installed. The side benefit for serious PC gamers is awesome, as we proved running Need For Speed: Carbon with all effects maxed out.
Both the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Microsoft Windows XP Pro can also be pre-packaged, while current application compatibility is assured with the Microsoft Windows Pro x32 edition. In addition there are dual Gigabit LAN ports for networking, a Sony DVD Re-writer and Roxio Easy Media Creator Basic to help you run off your projects on to DVD.
The performance speaks for itself in terms of lightning speed, huge storage capacity and crystal clear graphics, and with so much power at work under the bonnet, it's deeply impressive how the cooling system remains so resolutely quiet.
With so much storage capacity allied to Intel's Dual Core Xeon 5100 processors and Nvidia's Quadro graphics card range, this PC truly lives up to its name as a workstation designed for CAD and DCC endeavours. Such performance, of course, doesn't come cheap.
