wireless speakers for your phone (25/08/2008)
Music-playing mobiles are pretty much ubiquitous nowadays. Unless you are going for the really budget end of the mobile phone world, it is likely that your handset plays tunes and that it comes with its own headphones.
But wandering around with headphones on isn't always ideal. Sometimes you want to use proper speakers instead, maybe because you want to share your music or relax without being wired up. There are various takes on the ‘speakers for mobile phones' idea and Logitech has just come up with a wireless one.
The Pure-Fi Mobile speaker set isn't exactly portable. We measured it at 28cm wide and 70cm tall. Add in the extra bulk of the supplied protective carrying case which accommodates it and the associated cables, and it'll challenge pretty much any pocket. It could, though, sit fairly happily in a suitcase when you take a week's holiday.
Its internal rechargeable battery needs feeding with mains power every so often. The battery is quoted as offering a healthy 12 hours of music between charges and it will recharge via the supplied mains power cable or a provided USB charge cable, so you can piggyback off a charging laptop.

The speakers are designed to accept music sent to them over Bluetooth via the A2DP protocol. Check your handset has this feature before buying. Their range is 10 metres. Alternatively you get a short, 3.5mm jacked cable that you can pop into any device with a 3.5mm out headset connector for wired music transfer. This means you can use the speakers with most portable MP3 players.
As well as simply playing sounds the speakers have another feature on offer. The array of buttons and lights sitting along the long top edge includes Call and End buttons. Yes, you can use them as a wireless speakerphone.
The bottom section of the speakers sits on swivel feet, which can be called into use when needed to prop the speakers up, and fitted away when not required. All in all it is a very neat looking piece of kit. But at £100 it is not exactly a pocket money priced item, and the key test has to be how well it works.
Setup is straightforward and no more challenging than pairing any Bluetooth device with a phone. If you are really into your music you might find the sound output less than wonderful, though. The speakers lack bass performance and you've no equaliser controls to tweak what you are listening to. Top volume is loud enough if you are sitting near the speakers but the sound doesn't carry very far.
If your sights aren't set on a bass-rich portable speaker system, and you don't mind a bit of bulk in your bag, then this could be a handy accompaniment to your portable music player. It isn't, however, something to choose if you are into travelling light.
