22-inch widescreen with built-in TV tuner (10/03/2009)
A 22-inch widescreen display is either a good sized monitor or a small television. Although in the case of the M2294D it's both, as the unit has a built-in digital TV tuner and comes with a TV style remote control and all the appropriate connections around the back. We're talking analogue and DVI connectors for the PC, alongside two HDMI ports, two SCART sockets and a set of component inputs.
This LG monitor comes in the usual polished black, although the finish isn't quite up to the standard we've previously seen from the company when it comes to the stand. There's nothing wrong with it per se: it's just rather plasticky, but still does the job. Overall it's an aesthetically pleasing monitor and the picture quality doesn't disappoint either.
With a native resolution of 1680 x 1050, it displays a sharp image with a selection of picture settings provided in the on-screen menu (which is operated by some discreet buttons on the side of the panel). There's a cinema mode, one for sports, games and a custom user setting; although it's possible to adjust the parameters of any of the modes, which is handy. For example, we found the games setting a little too bright and improved it considerably by turning down the backlight a touch.

Watching a DVD on the M2294D in movie mode, we were impressed by the solid blacks and vibrant colours. It was the same story when gaming, and some frantic Left 4 Dead zombie blasting action left us in no doubt that the monitor had zero issues with ghosting (as you would expect with the quoted 5ms response time).
The built-in TV tuner does its stuff automatically: all you need to do is plug in an aerial and it sets everything up. As the M2294D is effectively a television set, it also comes with built-in speakers. They're a hidden pair rated at 3W apiece and again they come with different sound modes, one of which is SRS virtual surround.
Which is a bit ambitious, to say the least. Predictably, the surround is a damp squib that adds little or nothing in the way of dimensional depth to music or movies. However, if you stick to the gaming and cinema modes these produce a just-palatable noise, though it's on the tinny side. And don't turn the volume up past the two-thirds level, as some horrible crackly distortion creeps in.
This LG display has a high quality picture and plenty of connectivity options. It's an excellent solution for those who want a monitor-TV combination, and the only weak point here is the poor sound from the built-in speakers.
