mid-range Cybershot handset with HSDPA (24/07/2009)
The C510 from Sony Ericsson is a Cybershot handset that sits in the middle of the current line-up in terms of specifications. It is a small and light phone, its candybar design is familiar and it looks fairly unprepossessing.
For a small phone it has a good sized screen. Measuring 2.3 inches across diagonal corners, the screen is up to Sony Ericsson's usual high standards, delivering 320 x 240 pixels of high quality visuals.
What isn't so good is the key-pad. Sony Ericsson has disappointed us in the past with its key design and does so again here. The number-pad keys are thin and, while they aren't as pesky to use as some, we weren't able to create SMS messages at our usual top speed.
The remaining keys - Call, End, softmenu buttons and shortcuts - are small and if you have stubby fingers you may find hitting them accurately is a challenge. That said, some people will be perfectly happy with the key design. Try before you buy.

This is a 3G handset with HSDPA. Web browsing ought to be a treat with a relatively large screen and fast data connection, but we found that Sony Ericsson's Web browser could be a bit slow at times, particularly when zooming in and out of Web pages.
The C510 has a front-mounted camera for two-way video calling. The main camera, whose 3.2-megapixel lens unit is on the back of the casing, has a slide-away cover which protects both it and the dual LED flash units.
Camera controls sit on the 3, 6, 9 and # keys, giving you quick access to shooting modes, scenes, focus modes such as macro, and the flash. An accelerometer ensures that the screen turns as you twist the phone in your hand. This makes looking at photos a rewarding process, though the accelerometer doesn't work across all applications.
With 100MB of built-in memory and a Memory Stick Micro slot for adding more, there is plenty of scope for using this handset as a mobile music machine. Sony Ericsson's proprietary, side-mounted headset connector really does the phone no good at all in this respect, though. It jags the pocket and its oversized connector design looks out of step with the handset itself. It really is time Sony Ericsson moved to 3.5mm. But the FM radio is a good addition to music playback.
The battery lasted well, but as this phone lacks GPS and Wi-Fi there is only really 3G and music playing to push at the power usage.
The C510 is a solid mid-range Cybershot handset. Its key design won't suit everybody and the Web browser leaves a bit to be desired, but overall it does a good job.
