candybar smartphone with sliding QWERTY keyboard (07/09/2009)
The E75 brings a sliding QWERTY keyboard to the Nokia E range of smartphones. Primarily designed with business users in mind, the E range includes features like shortcut keys to calendar and messaging beneath the screen. But in fact the Es have been adopted more widely. Nokia's online store has it in black and a very bright and eye-catching shade of red, perhaps reflecting the wider audience.
It is easy to see why the Es have achieved broad appeal. The build quality of the E75 makes the fact obvious. The E75 is Nokia's first shot at a sliding keyboard and the mechanism is smooth and the keys relatively large, solid and easy to use at a fair turn of speed.
The screen, by comparison, is a bit of a let-down. It isn't very large at 2.4 diagonal inches, and its resolution at 320 x 240 pixels is average but no more. If you want to Web browse at length or view a lot of text, you might find a handset with a larger screen more appropriate.

There are plenty of useful applications and services built in alongside the S60 operating system. The E75 is an HSDPA device with Wi-Fi built in for those times when you don't want to use the network. A GPS antenna is included and Nokia Maps is pre-installed. You get three months free trial of the navigation service, though thereafter you have to start paying. Those who like to work on the move will find QuickOffice and the PDF viewer handy.
There is a front-facing camera for two-way video calling, and a main camera on the back of the casing. This is another weaker feature of the handset, shooting stills at resolutions up to 3.2 megapixels. There is an LED flash, but even so it does not perform well in low light conditions; it is an average camera.
But one feature we really like, which has started to crop up on E series handsets more generally, is the ability to switch the main screen between two modes. You can set up one main screen for work and one for leisure use, and so have a different wallpaper and different shortcut applications readily available. It is simple but very user friendly; you switch between the two using a shortcut on the main screen itself and the process of switching takes just a couple of seconds.
Another feature we are happy to see is the 3.5mm headset jack. The headphones themselves are of fairly good quality, and there is an FM radio built in for those times when you don't want to listen to your own tunes any more. With 50MB of internal memory and a 4GB microSD card included (the handset supports cards to 16GB) you've plenty of space for storing tunes and more.
The other big plus point is battery life. The E75 managed to play music non-stop from a full charge for twelve and a quarter hours; a battery life which puts most other smartphones we've seen to shame. Nokia says you should get 5 hours and 20 minutes of talk-time on GSM, 280 hours on standby.
As Nokia smartphones go, the E75 is a superb example. Well built and with plenty of features, it is only the small screen that might let things down if you are into media rich activity such as Web browsing.
