Walkman phone with 8-megapixel camera (02/10/2009)
The W995 is without a doubt the best Walkman phone I've seen. Sony Ericsson has managed to come up with a phone that works well on the ergonomics front, looks good, has plenty of features and delivers good battery life.
The build is solid and there is a little stand on the back which can be used to prop the phone up on a desk. This comes into its own if you use the built-in Wi-Fi with the built-in BBC iPlayer to watch either live TV or 'watch again' content and need somewhere to prop up the phone. Or maybe you just want it to stand on the desk so you can view the screen easily to see incoming calls and suchlike. Either way it works in both tall and wide screen configurations, and fits flush to the handset when not in use.
The screen isn't vast at 2.6 inches, but in usual Sony Ericsson fashion it is clear and sharp. The slider format keeps the handset fairly small when its number pad is hidden away, at 97mm tall, 49mm wide and 15mm thick. It weighs 113g so should not trouble your pocket.

The number pad keys are very well separated from each other and slightly raised from their surroundings, so they are easy to hit accurately. Texting at speed was not a problem. The front keys are also neatly designed. Sony Ericsson doesn't always get this right, coming up with keys that are too small or fiddly for many fingers.
The navigation pad offers shortcuts to applications, but this being a Walkman handset it also doubles up to offer playback controls. There are also back, forward, pause/play and volume controls on the right side of the phone so you can control music when you are in any application.
Shake control is here, too. Hold down the Walkman key on the left edge of the phone and shake to change tune and volume. It was silly before; it is still silly here.
There is a 3.5mm headset jack on the top edge of the headset as well as Sony Ericsson's usual proprietary connector on the left edge. The provided headset is two-piece so you can use your own headphones either in the on-device slot or plug them in just past the mic.
The 118MB of internal memory can be boosted with a microSD card and you get a generously sized 8GB card with the phone. The 8-megapixel camera shoots decent stills, though its LED flash is not up to a great deal in low light conditions.
There is built-in GPS and Sony Ericsson provides some software to take advantage, including Tracker for recording your route, time taken and even calories burned, for example on a cycle or a run. Google Maps is also pre-installed. There is a YouTube client and an FM radio for those times when your own music just isn't good enough.
Sony Ericsson has got it all together with the W995, which is our favourite Walkman phone ever. Enough said, really.
