Enterprise Resource Planning for SMEs (13/03/2007)
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) doesn't come cheap, especially packages from the likes of SAP and PeopleSoft which are aimed squarely at enterprise buyers with deep pockets. Mamut Enterprise, however, is an exception to that rule.
Just like the big name packages, Mamut Enterprise is a modular ERP solution comprising a number of components that can be mixed and matched as required. Opt for the full E5 package and you get the lot, with the end result being a full HMRC-accredited accounting system, complete with stock control, purchasing and logistics management. A similarly accredited payroll system is also included along with timesheet, human resource and contact management tools. You can even use it to create and run a basic e-commerce Web site.
Each component is integrated, with a whole stack of management reports also built in plus an optional business intelligence module that you can use to create your own. Modules to support a helpdesk and call centre operations can also be added and if you don't want the burden of installing and running the software yourself it can be bought as an online managed service instead.

The Mamut software, however, is far from difficult to install or use. It took us just a few minutes to load the single-user version onto a Windows XP or Vista PC and the multi-user version with shared database is equally straightforward. We also liked the consistent interface applied throughout, with a Web-like overview screen for each function.
Select the sales function, for example, and you're presented with a flowchart showing products and quotations leading to orders then invoices, with other entries to handle product delivery, chase debtors and so on. Similarly, the customer service flowchart has entries to manage projects, activities and contacts, while for accounting you get entries to navigate your way from initial journal entry to year-end consolidation.
All of these functions are interlinked and no matter where you click, an appropriate pop-up window will be displayed, often with a wizard, to add, view and process the associated data in more detail. You can also automate many of the follow-on tasks and, as well as a built-in shared calendar, integrate the Mamut package with Outlook and other Office applications.
On the downside, Mamut Enterprise lacks some of the more advanced features found in other packages. Some specialist knowledge is also required, particularly when it comes to the financial tools, in order to get the best out of the package. However, that's normal for this type of application and well within the scope of most small business managers, at which the product is clearly aimed.
Bear in mind, too, that it's designed to be used as a primary business tool, and if you're using it all the time it won't take long to become an expert. Added to which you get lots of supporting documentation, along with access to online and telephone support, seminars and training courses.
Best described as a poor man's ERP solution, Mamut Enterprise is a modular business management package with all the usual stock management, invoicing and financial planning tools along with payroll, contact management, reporting and other modules. All are well integrated behind a consistent user interface with Microsoft Office integration another plus.
